LALIQUE & MAGRITTE INTRODUCE: A SURREALIST ENCOUNTER IN CRYSTAL “LA VALSE HÉSITATION”
Launch: July 3, 2025
Lalique presents an extraordinary addition to the Lalique Art collection that unites the surrealist legacy of René Magritte with genius glassmaking: La Valse Hésitation, a crystal perfume flacon launched as a numbered edition of just 250 pieces worldwide. This sculptural object of desire merges French artisanal excellence with Magritte’s iconic artistic language, inviting collectors and aesthetes to rediscover the unseen through crystal and scent.
A CRYSTAL HOMAGE TO SURREALISM
The design is inspired by Magritte’s 1950 painting La Valse Hésitation, which depicts two green apples, each veiled with a mask. Lalique interprets this symbol of hidden realities as a singular, masked apple rendered in crystal – a delicate interplay of transparency and satin-finish, of light and texture. The result is a poetic tension between surface and substance, visible and concealed.
This creation is a celebration of the surreal, a theme that resonates through Magritte’s work and now finds new expression through Lalique’s savoir-faire. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted at the Maison’s historic workshops in Alsace, embodying both conceptual depth and technical excellence.
THE FRAGRANCE: A MANIFESTO OF AUDACITY
At the heart of the flacon lies an equally evocative composition by perfumer Véronique Nyberg. This Extrait de Parfum defies convention as she says: “a manifesto of audacity, to break free from the horizontal confines and ascend into the uncharted vertical realm.”
The scent opens with ultra-bright pink pepper and ginger, melts into shiso and jasmine absolute, and settles in amber-woody, musky waves of Orcanox™. Each ingredient is facetted like crystal “carefully chiselled like a crystal piece of art to perfectly mirror their own sparkle.”
The result is a dreamlike olfactory journey: bold, unexpected, and full of layers, much like the mysteries concealed beneath Magritte’s masked apples.
FULL COLLABORATION
The Magritte Foundation and Lalique celebrated in 2023 the 125th anniversary of René Magritte's birth. On the initiative of the Magritte Foundation, the enigmatic and poetic world of René Magritte was captured in crystal sculptures. Mention the name of Magritte today and the first images that spring to mind are a pipe, an apple and a bowler hat. It is precisely because of the prominence and iconic nature of these objects in the artist’s oeuvre that Lalique chose to recreate them in crystal. La Valse Hésitation is joining the extraordinary collection.

About René Magritte
René Magritte (1898–1967) was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. A master of surrealism, he challenged our perception of reality by combining ordinary objects with poetic logic, provoking what he called “a poetic shock.” Born in Belgium, Magritte helped form the Brussels surrealist group in the 1920s and became known for his distinctive style: clear, realistic imagery infused with mystery and contradiction.
His most iconic motifs such as the pipe, the apple and the bowler hat have become symbols in the global visual lexicon. Magritte was deeply fascinated by the interplay between words, images and objects, a concept he explored masterfully in works like La Trahison des images. While rooted in the everyday, his paintings defy conventional meaning and continue to inspire generations of artists, designers and philosophers.
